Cosmetic surgery is a type of surgery generally intended to improve the patient's appearance. It can be performed on patients who suffer from birth defects or deformities, or on patients who have suffered disfiguring injuries. Many people choose to have cosmetic surgery to change the appearance of a body part they're not comfortable with, or to reduce the signs of aging.
There are many types of cosmetic surgery procedures that can be performed on all parts of the body. Some are very invasive, while others are minimally invasive. Breast augmentation, facelift, skin resurfacing and a number of other procedures are considered cosmetic surgery.
In many cases, cosmetic surgery can be used to restore physical function after an injury, or to correct structural problems that affect physical function. In these cases, cosmetic surgery may be considered medically necessary and be covered by insurance. In cases where cosmetic surgery is performed for purely aesthetic reasons, patients must generally cover the costs themselves.
The risks of cosmetic surgery include infection, scarring and bad reactions to anesthesia. Other risks can vary widely, depending on the type of surgery to be performed and the general health of the patient at the time. Cosmetic surgery procedures should be performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon. Many surgeons specialize in a specific type of cosmetic surgery.
This procedure is usually performed under general anesthetic. You will probably need to spend at least one night in the hospital after your procedure. Most surgeons attempt to place the incisions in your skin's natural folds, to minimize the appearance of scars. The arm lift does, however, generally leave visible scars which will fade with time.
You will need to wear surgical support garments around your arms for at least two weeks following your arm lift. Bruising, discomfort and inflammation may last for as long as four weeks. You may need to limit your activities, especially those that require use of the arms, for up to four weeks after an arm lift. Scars may fade over a period of six months to two years, depending largely on how badly the individual patient typically scars.
