When discussing body contouring concerns with patients, it is crucial to identity the problem: excess fat, excess skin, or a combination of the two. Different procedures are employed to address different problems. For most patients, this ultimately becomes a question of liposuction vs. excisional procedure ( abdominoplasty etc.). Without reviewing your photos, making a recommendation is difficult.

The lower back is an area that is commonly addressed via liposuction. However, the question of candidate or not is best answered in person via exam.

I typically recommend that any patient considering either procedure reach a happy and stable weight in order to ensure the optimal outcome. These interventions are not weight loss procedures and are primarily aimed at shaping and contouring. If you have not reached your goal weight, I would encourage you to delay any procedure.

As always, discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

I have a lot of excess skin hanging from my belly, but because the other areas of my body (like legs) are much smaller, the extra skin adds extra weight and pressure on them. I find that my back and ankles hurt. I currently receive disability benefits. Do you think my insurance will pay to have the excess skin removed so that my back and ankles don't hurt?
