I have excess skin that is causing back and ankle pain. Will most insurance companies pay for all or part of a procedure to remove the skin?

I have a lot of excess skin hanging from my belly, but because the other areas of my body (like legs) are much smaller, the extra skin adds extra weight and pressure on them. I find that my back and ankles hurt. I currently receive disability benefits. Do you think my insurance will pay to have the excess skin removed so that my back and ankles don't hurt?

Insurance requirements for excision of excess skin will vary from provider to provider. In any case, there needs to be a demonstrable medical need and benefit over and beyond more conservative measures in order to secure coverage.

Excision of excess abdominal skin (panniculectomy) is recommended in patients with a hanging pannus (skin apron), which is leading to recurrent rashes in the underlying fold and subsequent infections and skin breakdowns.

As always, discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

It is rare for an insurance company to pay to have the extra skin removed. The operation is called a panniculectomy.
