How much weight do you have to lose to have excess skin removed?

I had gastric bypass surgery in October 2011. This procedure helped me lose 100 pounds. I want to find out how much weight you need to lose to have the excess skin removed?

You have lost enough, but depends on your current weight and your goal weight.

Great job on your weight loss. Most insurance companies will not cover excess skin removal. If your weight is stable, then you are a good candidate for excess skin removal. Medicare only covers excess skin removal of the lower abdomen and the patient has to have a history of infection. In other words, the excess skin needs to be causing a problem and not just be a "cosmetic" issue.

Congratulations on your weight loss. The answer varies from patient to patient. The weight should be stable for at least a few months in order to allow the skin to stabilize. This may be more than 100 pounds in some patients and less weight for others. Stable skin will lead to the best results. See a board-certified plastic surgeon to guide you. Best wishes!
