There are times when the areola is too large or does not have a typically round shape. There are also instances where the nipple is inverted, bulges out too much, is misshapen, a different size than the other, or somehow doesn’t have the appearance of a “normal” nipple. Nipple and/or areola surgery is a solution.

Depending on the case, nipple surgery—which is typically performed with local anesthesia—can be as simple as pulling the nipple out and supporting it with a loop, or more complicated as inserting a prosthetic to prop the nipple up and out, or using surgical instruments and manipulation to reshape or reduce the size of the nipple.

Nipple or areola revision usually takes about one hour and you can go home not long after your procedure.

For nipple reduction, your surgeon makes a tiny cut along the nipple itself. For areola reduction, the incision is made around the perimeter of the areola. Then, the surgeon removes excess tissue from the area and closes the incision site with stitches. A gauze dressing is placed over the breasts, and then a specialized surgical bra to ensure proper healing.

While results of the areola or nipple reduction are permanent, the procedures do not prevent the breasts from drooping or sagging as a result of the natural aging process. 

As with any surgery, there are potential side effects or risks. For both nipple and areola surgery, there is a risk of infection, scarring, loss of sensation, tissue damage, and bleeding. However, these complications can be reduced by choosing a qualified surgeon and by following the after-care instructions he/she has given you.
