Lip Augmentation in San Antonio, Texas (TX)

Lip augmentation is an aesthetic surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the lips by making them fuller and reshaping them through injection or implantation (requiring incisions and sutures) of a synthetic or biological material into the lips.

The history of lip augmentation dates back to the 1900s, where surgeons used paraffin to enlarge the lips without success. This was followed by the practice of injecting silicone, similar to the type of material used for breast implants, into the lips in the 1960s. Collagen injections, which require an allergy test prior to use, were introduced in the 1990s. However, collagen does not last long and is absorbed by the body in approximately one to three months. Current materials used in lip augmentation are materials closely resembling hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substances found in joints. These can last for approximately six months or longer.

The effects of lip augmentation are not permanent; the material injected in the lips will be absorbed by the body over time. Side effects of the procedure may include tenderness or swelling of the lips, which may last two or three weeks. Other effects may include redness or itching. Lip augmentation is contraindicated in patients with multiple allergies, diabetes or sever hypertension.
