Breast implants may need to be removed for a variety of
reasons, including an implant rupture, capsular contracture, capsular
calcifications, etc. Upon removal, the breasts may droop and lack volume. You
then have the option to use fat from your own body to create more natural-looking
and feeling breasts, or a new implant can be inserted and fat can be added,
should you desire, to enhance the appearance and create fullness.
But regarding breast implant removal due to implant
rupture, capsular contracture and capsular calcifications, the implant capsule
may need to be removed as well, and this is referred to as a capsulotomy. Whether
the capsule is removed or not, however, is determined by your board-certified
plastic surgeon who will perform a physical exam, radiological studies, or
both. Internal breast work may also be needed. This requires situating breast
tissue where it belongs: central to the breast. By doing this, the surgeon
gives you a full and taut breast. Another procedure that may be performed in
addition to breast implant removal and/or replacement is a mastopexy, or breast
lift, to tighten loose skin.
