Facial reconstruction is a type of plastic surgery that can reconstruct facial structures and also improve impaired function in areas such as the ears, nose, lips or eyes. This type of surgery can require a series of interventions and employ skin, bone, cartilage, muscle or fat grafts, as well as prosthetic devices made of metal (e.g. titanium) or other artificial materials that are well accepted by the human body (e.g. silicone).
The surgery typically involves general sedation and if grafts are necessary, some preparation is needed to assess the best areas of the body to harvest the grafts from. The skin/bone/cartilage is harvested in the same operation as the reconstruction or in a different surgery. The patient will be informed about the steps of the surgery and what to expect after the procedure, so that she can prepare ahead. Typically, the patient will need at least three days off work and another three to five weeks of recovery, during which she may not be able to speak properly or may be covered by bandages.
A facial reconstruction can be performed by a facial plastic surgeon or a craniofacial surgeon, and it is highly important to choose a skilled professional to obtain optimal results.
