  • Burns - these can often cause debilitating scars which can contract, reducing movement capabilities
  • Congenital abnormalities - these can be any number of different abnormalities which cause an impairment in functionality
  • Developmental abnormalities - these can be a variety of abnormalities as well
  • Infection - any functionality lost due to an infection or disease may be treatable by reconstructive surgical techniques

These are just a few of the reasons that a person may seek to have reconstructive surgery. While often not necessary, the improved functionality that reconstructive surgery can provide many people is often an attractive quality.

Techniques

There are a variety of common techniques used in reconstructive surgery which are used in other forms of surgery, such as incisions, excisions, laser surgery, and liposuction.

Skin Grafting: One of the most common procedures found in reconstructive surgery are skin grafting techniques. Skin grafting techniques can vary from using skin from different parts of the body, to using synthetic compounds. This allows for many different types of changes, including helping in burn victims where a significant amount of skin has been lost. Skin grafting can be used to take pieces of skin from undamaged portions of the body and transplanted to burnt portions of the body, where the skin can take hold and begin growing, helping speed up the recovery process, thereby reducing the chance of infection setting in.
