Is There Alot of Swelling Involved After a Nose Job?

Nose is a very delicate structure and like after any surgery, considerable swelling and bruising is seen after rhinoplasty as well. For this very reason, patients should not expect to look great immediately after surgery. Expect the swelling and bruising to increase on the first few days, along with a swollen, puffy face and black eyes. On an average, swelling lasts for about 1-6 weeks for closed rhinoplasty, and 1-6 months for open rhinoplasty.

Though the extent of swelling differs from patient to patient, individual swelling and bruising will depend on the problem treated, surgical techniques implemented, and how one’s tissues heal. A nasal splint or nasal packing is placed on the nose to control swelling and doctors may recommend ice packs over the eyes for the first 2 days. Dressing is usually removed between 7-10 days after surgery and most people can return to work after 1- 3 weeks.

How to Manage and Reduce Swelling After Rhinoplasty Surgery

Since one cannot avoid a swelling, the following steps can be taken to help manage it better:

  1. Apply a cold, dry compress often as per your doctor's protocol.
  2. Get back on your feet as soon as possible as walking boosts circulation and can help reduce swelling in the facial area.
  3. Keep your head elevated as much as possible both during waking and sleeping hours.
  4. Do not begin vigorous exercise until you get permission from your doctor.
  5. Avoid hot showers because steamy water can increase swelling.
  6. You could use homeopathic treatments (arnica gel) to reduce swelling, but do so only with your doctor’s permission.
