How Long Does the Rhinoplasty Surgery Last?

Rhinoplasty is a very popular plastic surgery procedure and by far, the most demanding of all plastic surgery procedures. This is so due to a complicated nasal anatomy that restricts access for surgery. The success of the procedure therefore depends on the surgeon’s dexterity and through knowledge of the anatomy of the nose.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Duration

As the surgeon needs to perform the surgery mainly by accurate estimations and feel, this surgery can take anywhere between one to four hours to complete, with straightforward cases taking lesser time and more serious cases taking the maximum time. A secondary surgery (done to amend the results of the first nose job), could take up to six hours. The duration for nasal tip surgery is about 1 hour. For septorhinoplasty (surgery of the nasal septum), the duration is somewhat more and changes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours.

The Two Nose Job Techniques

Rhinoplasty is done using either one of the two approaches, open or closed. While both procedures involve the surgeon making incisions inside the nose, the difference lies in the extra incision made on the skin separating the nostrils while using the open technique. Irrespective of this operational difference, the preparation time for both techniques is the same. Both are performed under general anaesthetic, although straightforward cases can be tackled under local anaesthetic as well. In the end, the decision between these nose surgeries comes down to a question of whether the surgeon will have enough access without the cut and whether getting that access will be worth the tiny scar it will leave.
