SMAS Surgery (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System)

Superficial musculoaponeurotic  system, or SMAS surgery, is a common cosmetic surgery that is used to treat sagging cheeks or jowls.  SMAS surgery is the most common kind of facelift probably because sagging cheeks is a very common problem area for many men and women as they age.  The superficial musculoaponeurotic system is made up of the superficial muscles in the face.  SMAS facelifts help smooth the appearance of this area of the face and tightens the underlying tissues that begin to droop thanks to the process of natural aging.  By eliminating the appearance of sagging cheeks, patients that undergo SMAS facelifts are left with a more vital and youthful appearance.

SMAS Facelift Procedure

To perform a SMAS facelift, the surgeon makes an incision at the temple above the hairline and extends the incision downward.  The surgeon then continues to cut behind the ears and lifts the skin.  He will then remove excess skin and tissue and suture the areas back in place, eliminate areas that are sagging.  This provides a natural looking appearance and when done correctly the area looks tight, but not pulled.

Risks of SMAS Surgery

Even though SMAS procedures are routinely performed and relatively safe, there are complications that can occur.  Some possible risks include:

  • Infection
  • Swelling
  • Medication reactions
  • Nerve damage
  • Problems with wound healing
  • Pain that does not resolve
  • Numbness
  • Excessive scarring
  • Asymmetry of the face

Recovery from SMAS Surgery

Complete recovery after a SMAS surgery can take up to several weeks, during which time there will be several follow up visits to the surgeon to assure that the surgical area is healing and to check for complications.  During the days immediately following surgery, patients are encouraged to rest and use pain medication prescribed to them by their surgeon.  Other restrictions, like bending over or heavy lifting will be limited in the weeks to follow.

SMAS Facelift Cost

A typical SMAS procedure can cost from ten to fifteen thousand dollars.  This price depends on the surgeon and where the surgery is performed.
