Facelift Surgery Introduction

Among the most requested cosmetic procedures by patients today is the facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy.  The aim of this procedure is to turn back the clock on the visible signs of aging by removing wrinkles, lines, and excess fat around the eyes, neck, nose, and mouth.

The plastic surgeon will surgically remove excess skin and jowls around the check and neck, will tighten muscles, and rewrap the skin to the contours of the face, resulting in a dramatically more youthful appearance.  The process is also used to reverse the effects of age, gravity, genetics, and sun damage.

Facelifts are often used in combination with other cosmetic procedures, such as skin resurfacing, eyelid repair, and forehead lift to enhance aesthetic results.  Patients considering a facelift should consult a board certified licensed plastic surgeon before deciding to have surgery.  In doing so, you can also learn if a particular doctor has completed required training and is working toward certification.  Patients should also ask about the surgeon’s particular experience performing a facelift because not all plastic surgeons regularly perform such a procedure.

Finally, let the doctor know about any preexisting medical conditions or take any medications.   Communication between you and your doctor is essential prior to a facelift procedure.  This will allow the doctor to anticipate and manage risks during the procedure, while in recuperation, and on follow up visits.
