Am I a Candidate for a Facelift Surgery?

The best facelift candidates will have realistic expectations and follow the advice of their plastic surgeons.  There is no optimal age for having facelift surgery performed, although most patients who undergo the procedure are between 40 and 70 years old.  In fact, skin condition and texture are more important factors than age.  After meeting with a plastic surgeon, the patient will usually be advised as to whether he or she is a good candidate for facelift surgery, or whether an alternate procedure might be preferable.

The Best Candidates for Facelifts Have:

  • Loose skin on the face or neck:  A good candidate for a facelift will have loose skin around the face and neck which the surgeon and cut and remove.
  • Skin elasticity:  Patients whose skin is supple will be able to heal more rapidly.  Skin that has excessive sun damage will potentially lead to more scar tissue formation and impair wound healing.
  • Strong bone structure:  Patients undergoing a facelift need strong bone structure to support skin stretching and remodeling of the face.  Patients without strong bone structure may benefit from facial implants instead or in addition to a facelift.
  • Realistic expectations:  An optimal facelift candidate will understand not only what a facelift can accomplish cosmetically, but also its limitations.
  • Good overall health:  An optimal candidate will be generally healthy and will inform their surgeon of any preexisting conditions.  A facelift is an invasive surgical procedure and requires significant healing and recuperation.  Patients need to be physically healthy enough to have such a surgical procedure.

In order best to determine whether you are a good candidate for a facelift, contact a licensed board certified plastic surgeon.
