Browlift

What is a Browlift?

A browlift, also referred to as a forehead lift or eyebrow rejuvenation, is a cosmetic procedure intended to eliminate forehead lines and lift the eyebrows to create a more youthful appearance.

How is a Browlift performed?

Browlifts fall into three different categories, each with specific advantages depending on the patient's needs. A hairline browlift requires an incision where the forehead ends and the hairline begins. Extra skin is cut to eliminate wrinkles. This procedure is typically used for individuals with high receding hairlines. Because this specific browlift procedure may leave a scar, it is generally performed on those whose hairstyles can cover the scar.

The coronal browlift requires an incision along the top of the forehead extending down to each ear. The skin is then lifted up to create a smooth look. Extra skin is cut and the scalp is sewn. To eliminate some horizontal lines, forehead muscles may be weakened.

Another type of browlift involves an endoscope. Five or so incisions are made near the hairline and the skin is lifted. Tiny screws are inserted and held in place by stitches to secure the skin until full healing occurs.

Who is a candidate for a Browlift?

Browlifts are more commonly performed on people over age 40. However, younger people who have furrowed lines or a low brow due to heredity, stress or extensive facial muscle activity may benefit from the procedure. Browlift candidates must be healthy and free of serious illnesses. The procedure is not recommended for smokers or those who are exposed to second-hand smoke on a consistent basis. Smoking interferes with adequate blood flow and slows down necessary healing. The complications for smokers may include infection, scarring and loss of skin.

What is the nature of the recovery period after a Browlift?

Most procedures are outpatient and some individuals may be required to stay in the hospital overnight. It takes about three weeks to recover from a browlift to the point where signs of surgery are no longer visible. During this time, individuals may experience bruising, swelling and numbness. Tiredness, headaches and skin tightness are also common reactions. As the nerves heal, itching may be experienced for a period of six months. Hair along the incision lines begins to grow back after a few weeks.

What are the risks of a Browlift?

The risks of a browlift include excessive bleeding, infection and complications related to anesthesia. Some may experience permanent feelings of numbness near the scalp. Nerve damage may also be a factor, which can result in forehead paralysis, and occurs in less than one percent of those treated.

What are the results of a Browlift?

The intended results of a browlift are apparent after about six weeks and continue to evolve into the desired state for a period of six months. Individuals look more youthful, less tired and exhibit fewer forehead lines and droopiness in the eye region. These results are sustained for a period of five to seven years, after which additional lines may reappear, particularly in those who actively engage their forehead muscles as a habit.
