Performing Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is far from the most widely performed breast enhancement procedure for women.  In fact, some people make jokes about it, wondering why in the world any woman would ever want to have her breasts made smaller.  However, the fact remains that thousands of women go through with this surgery every year—and, that after they recover from their surgeries, these women are much happier.

Why Breast Reduction?

There are several reasons why women choose to have breast reduction surgeries.  The best breast reductions will put a woman’s breasts back into proportion with the rest of her body.  This enables women to get rid of problems such as these:

  • Physical pain and discomfort in the back, neck, and shoulders caused by overly large breasts
  • Self-consciousness from having pendulous breasts
  • Limitations on physical activity due to large breasts
  • Skin irritations and rashes underneath the breast creases
  • Bra strap indentations from heavy breasts weighing down the bras

Though some women do experience side effects from surgery—as can happen with any type of surgery—most women who undergo breast reduction under the skillful hands of one of the best breast reduction surgeons end up quite happy with the outcome.

How is the Surgery Performed?

The method used for a specific woman will be determined by her individual surgeon; however, most breast reduction surgeries follow a pattern much like this:

  • Anesthesia: Either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is used.  This may depend upon the woman’s other health conditions and/or on any other medications she may be taking.
  • Incisions: There are three options here—circular incisions around the areola, a keyhole-shaped incision around the areola and below it, or an inverted T-shaped incision around the areola and around it.  The method used will depend upon the shape of a woman’s breasts as well as the amount of breast material to be removed.  The best breast reduction surgeons will discuss the method to be used ahead of time with the patient.
  • Removing tissue: The surgeon will remove enough breast tissue to reduce the woman’s breast size to what she wants it to be.
  • Repositioning: In many cases, the breast tissue removal causes the necessity of the repositioning of the nipple.  The nipple remains connected to its nerve supply throughout the surgery—the best breast reduction surgeons make sure of this—so no loss of sensation will result.
  • Areola reduction: Some women need to have the size of their areola reduced once their breasts have reduced in size.
  • Closing the incisions: Surgery is finished.
