Vaginal Rejuvenation: Myths and Facts

Vaginal Rejuvenation is a surgical procedure that can be performed with a laser or traditional surgical method to improve the function or cosmetic appearance of the vagina. It usually includes both a Labiaplasty (reduces the size of the labia to reduce pain and attain a more youthful appearance) and Angioplasty (the tightening of the tissue and muscles and the removal of the excess lining of the vagina, to enhance sexual sensitivity and pleasure).

Myth: Vaginal Rejuvenation Is Not Covered by Insurance

Fact: Although vaginal rejuvenation is not usually covered by an insurance plan or company policy as it is an elective surgery, some exceptions do sometimes exist. Some individuals are successful with their claim to have it fully or partially covered if the reason is because of extreme pain, or if there is a stress incontinence from laughing or coughing and the sort. After giving birth to children, many women have relaxed muscles in the upper part of the vagina, and the possibility of the bladder and urethra lowering. When this occurs, the urine could leak out unintentionally. In this situation, some individuals have had positive results with their claims. It is recommended that if the application is refused, to ask the doctor to resubmit the claim with a letter of explanation as to why it is necessary.

Myth: A Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure is Performed in 1 to 3 Hours

Fact: Often, patients who have a vaginal rejuvenation procedure performed are out the same day (outpatient basis), but at times, hospital stays of 1 or 2 daysﾠmay be necessary, increasing the cost of the procedure.

Myth: Sexual Intercourse Can Resume 2 Weeks after Surgery

Fact: Sexual intercourse cannot resume for at least 6 to 8 weeks after a vaginal rejuvenation surgery. This is to allow more time to recover from the surgery, and to lower the possibility of the tearing of vaginal muscles and tissues before it is completely healed.

Myth: The Procedure Costs about $2,000 to $3,000

Fact: A vaginal rejuvenation procedure costs about $6,000 to $10,000, depending on what services the fee includes. Some costs include the general anesthesia, hospital stay and more, and others charge separately for the additional services. It rarely is covered by insurance as it is an elective surgery. Some clinics do, however, offer a financial payment plan option. Others require a 50 percent down payment before any procedure is performed. It is always wise to inquire on what services are included for the fee.

Myth: Vaginal Rejuvenation is Always Done by Laser

Fact: A vaginal rejuvenation surgery is sometimes done the traditional way, and can also be done with a laser technique. It does depend on the preference of the cosmetic surgeon. It is a good idea to ask the surgeon that you are considering, which method he will be utilizing.
