Post-Hymenoplasty Lifestyle & Maintenance

Hymenoplasty involves the process of tightening the vaginal walls by stitching the outer edges of the hymen. There are two kinds of surgery involving this process. One is the traditional method, and the second one is the laser method. The traditional surgical method could take up to two hours, while the laser surgery could last 30 to 45 minutes.

The hymen of the vagina usually can be ruptured due to sexual intercourse, sports activities like horseback riding and swimming, and activities which involve extreme stretching like gymnastics. Mostly women coming from conservative social backgrounds choose to go for hymenoplasty because they want to keep their virginity intact to present themselves to their husband as virgins, since virginity is a physical sign of chastity for women.

Lifestyle & Maintenance after Hymenoplasty

Once the Hymenoplasty procedure has been done, it is very important to take care of yourself and make some temporary and permanent changes in your lifestyle. The maintenance of the hymen is important after the surgery, as the wound takes time to heal. Some of the things that a woman who has undergone hymenoplasty must keep in mind are:

  • It takes at least 4 to 6 weeks to have full recovery. You need to make sure to keep the vagina extremely clean to help avoid any kind of dirt particles from settling in the stitch wounds.
  • Do not resume sexual activity until the soreness and discharge has settled, as it will increase the soreness and pain.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects and housekeeping work for at least a week, as this will bring pressure on the entire vaginal area. Any kind of pressure soon after your Hymenoplasty procedure can harm the hymen again, which will cause the pain to come back and the entire process will need to be redone.
  • Try to relax and stay calm for the first few weeks after surgery. Keep your mind off of the everyday stress and tension you may be going through. Try to do relaxing activities such as reading a book or watching television.
  • Avoid heavy and strenuous work during your recovery. Rest is the best way to heal the wounds, so the more you can rest, the faster you will recover and be able to resume your daily activities.
  • Eat a well maintained diet to give your body the energy and nutrients it needs to recover.
  • If all goes well with no complications, the first time you engage in sexual intercourse after the Hymenoplasty, you will bleed and experience some discomfort, and this is expected.

Each woman may have different reasons for wanting to undergo this procedure, and it is important to discuss all of your options with your surgeon. Make sure you are clear on what to expect during the procedure, any possible side effects and how you should take care of yourself after the surgery. Always follow your surgeon's instructions.
