Hymenoplasty, also known as hymen repair or revirgination, is the surgical repair or replacement of a torn hymen. This surgery is most often pursued for cultural or religious reasons. Tampon use, vigorous exercise or sexual intercourse can cause a hymen to rupture. Surgeons can either repair the torn hymen by reconnecting the tissue, or if that isn't possible, surgeons can also implant an artificial hymen.
Who Provides Hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty is a relatively recent development in gynecological surgery. It may not be available as widely as other cosmetic surgery procedures. Usually the surgeons who offer this procedure specialize in gynecology or gynecological repair and modification, although you may find it offered by general cosmetic surgeons. Your gynecologist or general practitioner may be able to point you towards doctors in your area who offer it. You may also be able to find information and resources at sexual health centers.
Where is Hymenoplasty Performed?
Hymenoplasty is often an outpatient procedure that takes only an hour or two. It can be performed in the surgeon's own office if he or she has a state-accredited facility. Alternatively, the doctor may have an agreement with a nearby hospital to use their facilities, but keep in mind this can often translate to a higher price tag.
Qualifications for Hymenoplasty Surgeons
Always check to see if your doctor is board-certified and by which board. The American Society for Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgeons are examples of common providers of certification and accreditation. Follow up this question with research on the board or association. Certification often requires additional training and practice beyond medical school.
The ideal gynecological surgeon is one who specializes in this type of surgery and has plenty of practice. It is okay to ask your surgeon how many of these procedures he or she has performed, and how frequently he or she performs them. Discreetness and confidentiality may also be important to you, so you should choose a doctor with whom you feel comfortable.
