Lipoplasty Surgery Introduction

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a procedure in which fat cells are sucked out of a person’s body through a tube.  It is a procedure that is performed by a plastic surgeon and under general anesthesia.  An increasingly common type of body contouring, many people who have some “problem areas” are consulting plastic surgeons to see if liposuction is right for them.  Liposuction is an increasingly safe and popular type of plastic surgery and no longer available to only the rich and famous.  Soccer moms and everyday Joes now have the opportunity to have body contouring just like Hollywood starlets!

Types of Liposuction

There are several different types of liposuction. Your surgeon will help you decide which type is the best option.  All of the different types of liposuction basically work the same way.  The fat cells are extracted from the body through a tube called a cannula.

  • Tumescent Liposuction: In this type of procedure, the surgeon injects anesthetic under the skin and then removes the fat.
  • Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction: First uses soundwaves to help liquefy the fatty tissue before it is removed.
  • Power Assisted Liposuction:  This type uses a cannula that is motorized allowing the surgeon to do less damage to surrounding tissue.  This helps make the procedure  less painful.

Consult a Plastic Surgeon

The best way to determine if liposuction is the right choice for you is to have a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon.  Your surgeon will be able to help you decide if liposuction will help you meet your cosmetic goals and talk with you about different kinds of liposuction.
