Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction, while an increasingly safe and popular procedure, is not without risks.  Your surgeon will help you decide if you are an excellent candidate for a body sculpting procedure like liposuction.  Liposuction is not a quick fix for obesity; it is intended to assist people who are within a normal weight range fix areas of their bodies that remain fat or flabby even with a good diet and exercise.  A perfect candidate for this type of procedure should not be more than twenty pounds overweight and should also exercise on a regular basis and eat a healthy diet.  Most surgeons will not recommend quickly losing weight immediately before or after liposuction.  The people that will have the best results with liposuction have fat deposits that are resistant to exercise.

Who is a Not a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is performed every day, usually with minimal risk to the patients.  Patients at higher risk for complications due to surgery include people who have a medical history of cardiovascular disease, immunodeficiency problems, and bleeding or clotting disorders.  People who have unrealistic expectations of the surgery are also not good candidates.  While liposuction is helpful in removing pesky fat deposits that don’t disappear with exercise, it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.  A person who undergoes liposuction thinking it will transform them into a person with a different body type is sure to be disappointed.
