Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a person's breathing repeatedly stops and starts again during sleep. It is a serious medical condition that requires attention. Symptoms of sleep apnea include, but are not limited to, loud snoring, sleepiness during the day, headaches in the morning, forgetfulness, insomnia or recurring waking up during the night and waking up with a very sore, dry throat in the morning. Sleep apnea is more common in older adults, but can affect any age. A person with sleep apnea may have reoccurring incidents of choking or gasping for air, but won't remember it in the morning when they awake. More often than not, it is the bed partner who will first notice the symptoms of sleep apnea.
