Stretch marks form when the middle layer of skin is stretched so tight that the skin's connective tissue is damaged. Stretch marks are actually scars and are found most frequently on the stomachs of previously pregnant women and on the bodies of people who have lost a lot of weight. There are several procedures available for stretch mark removal including laser treatment, chemical peels, micro-dermabrasion treatment, and surgery. There are also lotions and solutions advertised that claim to remove stretch marks but many only serve to lighten the scars. The most common areas where stretch marks are found are on the stomach and thighs but they can also appear on the legs, arms and breasts. Surgery is the most invasive and most costly procedure, but it is also the most effective for permanent stretch mark removal.
