Sleep Apnea Surgery

Sleep apnea surgery is recommended when the condition is severe. The surgery removes tissue at the back of the throat so the tissue can no longer block the airway. The surgeon may also remove the tonsils and adenoids during the procedure. In fact the removal of tonsils and adenoids in children often corrects sleep apnea. The surgery is not always successful or over time the benefits first achieved do not last. There are certain risks associated with this surgery too including changes made to the soft palate that result in it being difficult to prevent liquids from entering the airway or general swallowing problems. The experience of the surgeon in performing this type of surgery is an important factor. New procedures are being used now that include the use of laser technology.
