Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants have a history dating back to 1992. Deemed unsafe by the FDA after it was discovered they cause health problems in women, the implants were removed from the marketplace for further study. In 2006 a new gel filled breast implant was introduced that the FDA thoroughly tested and said was safe for use. The advantages the new version has over the original implants include increased durability, less chance of leakage, and the ability to give the breast a smoother appearance. The new breast implants require a larger incision though because they are preformed. The larger incision introduces the possibility of increased pain from the surgery. And once it is inserted in the breast, the size of the implant cannot be changed. The consequences of implants have led to lawsuits by patients dissatisfied with promised results or experiencing surgery side effects.
