As the old adage goes, beauty is only skin deep.  But can making some minor alterations to one’s physical appearance lead to more satisfying experiences in the bedroom?  When a person feels attractive and has a positive outlook about their appearance, they generally are happier and more relaxed.  Unfortunately stress, overeating, childbirth and rapid weight loss or gain can leave a person with physical characteristics that they feel are less than desirable.  Plastic surgery can often correct what a person feels is unattractive about their physical appearance, leading to a better self image and a healthier more relaxed and active sex life. A couple can find a renewed passion in their relationship thanks to this better self image of one of the partners.  A better sex life can lead to a more vital lifestyle, less health problems and some studies show a longer life!

Make Love Not Love Handles

Life happens to people; it is difficult for many people to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine due to the stressors of work, family and other responsibilities.  For women, pregnancy and childbirth change their breasts, abdomen and overall body shape.  For men fat often accumulates in the abdominal area.  Any of these changes can lead to having a poor body image and low self esteem.  Women are often more plagued than men when it comes to issues of a poor body image.  Plastic surgery can be a solution to many of these perceived problems.  After recovering from surgery, a better self image can lead to being more relaxed and adventurous in the bedroom.  One study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal reports that the sex lives of both the patient and their sexual partner can be strikingly enhanced especially if their surgery focuses on rejuvenation of their breasts, abdomen or thighs.  More than ninety five percent of those patients who participated in this study report an increase in their satisfaction with their body with approximately half reporting an increase in sexual satisfaction.   More than half the patients in this study report wearing more provocative clothing and also an increased ability to achieve orgasm.  Surgery is not without risks, but generally the outcomes with most aesthetic procedure are positive for not only the person undergoing the surgery but also their partner.

Who Should Consider Cosmetic Surgery?

Not everyone is an ideal candidate for plastic surgery.  One of the worst reasons to consider cosmetic surgery is to please someone else. In a long term, stable relationship where perhaps sexual activity or sexual interest has waned, there might be renewed interest in sexual activity if a person feels uninhibited and not self conscious about areas of their body. While many elective cosmetic procedures are considered “minor” surgeries they are still surgeries which require anesthesia and sometimes weeks of recovery time.  These types of procedures should only be considered to enhance one’s own body image, not the ideals of a sexual partner. Upon arriving at a decision to embark on a cosmetic procedure it is important to do research.  The internet can become a valuable tool for researching different procedures and also different surgeons to perform them.

It is important for the surgical candidate to consider other options and become mentally prepared for the surgical process.  Depending on the procedure, the results of cosmetic surgery might be subtle or drastic and both can impact the mental outlook of the person having surgery.

What’s Available and How will it Affect Sex and Relationships?

Once the decision has been reached to undergo a cosmetic procedure, the next step is to meet with a surgeon and decide exactly what procedure will be necessary to get exactly the right results for the most satisfactory body image.  The expert surgeon will have an extensive meeting with patients to discuss the procedures and describe what the results will be like.  Some of them most common procedures include:

  • Boob jobs (bigger, smaller, lifted)
  • Liposuction & body sculpting
  • Tummy tuck
  • Nose, eyelids, brows, cheeks, chins
  • Butt lift
  • Dental surgery
  • Vaginal rejuvenation
  • Face lift

It is a good idea for someone undergoing any of these procedures to be realistic about their outcomes.  Will it fix every problem in a relationship?  No.  Will it dramatically change the way someone sees themselves and others see them?  Maybe not.  But will it allow a person to not focus on a perceived “flaw” and maybe enjoy themselves a little more?  This is a more realistic expectation.  The goal in any kind of aesthetic surgery is to have the outside of a person match the inside.  It’s a common occurrence for people to wake up at forty or fifty and say “I feel like I’m twenty”.  While they may never look exactly like twenty again, they can now improve their self esteem through a lift, tuck or augmentation.  While maybe not a drastic change, it can make someone feel a hundred percent better about their outward appearance.  They can become more outgoing in their relationships and more active in their sex lives.

Of course a sexual partner will be attracted to a new physical appearance.  Breasts that might have gone from slightly saggy to high and firm or newly slimmed down abdominal area might heighten a partner’s sexual experience.  More attractive though than the new breasts, butt or abdomen will be the new attitude and positive self image.  When the person who has undergone surgery feels good about themselves, they will want their partner to feel good as well and who knows what kind of fun that can lead to! With a better self image, the partner will be more adventurous. A couple might be free to explore new position, sexy negligee and role playing all thanks to a new and improved body and self image.

To ensure great outcomes after surgery and the greatest satisfaction with new body altercations, the most valuable thing to do is to talk to a surgeon that is experienced and knowledgeable about aesthetic procedures and cosmetic surgery.  Sometimes it is a good idea to go to more than one surgeon and get other opinions.  The surgeon will outline the procedure, give options for other procedures, and of course explain what will happen during the surgery as well as the recovery time after.  It is so important to find a capable, trustworthy doctor that has performed the specific procedure before and is ready and willing to answer a patient’s questions.  When the doctor and patient both have similar goals and expectations, the outcome of surgery is generally positive for both.  Also, the more relaxed and confident the patient is prior to the procedure, the better the outcome.
