Nose is the most prominent feature of one’s face and it is therefore no surprise that an increasing number of people are enamoured with the idea of having a perfect nose. Getting a nose job or rhinoplasty as it is medically referred to, opens up options for those dissatisfied with their nose to reshape it entirely and eventually give one’s face and sometimes personality a boost.  Sometimes, rhinoplasties are also performed to correct a functional deformity of the nose.

The Closed Rhinoplasty Approach

Traditionally, rhinoplasty was performed using a ‘closed’ approach, often also called endonasal approach, hence, the terms rhinoplasty and endonasal procedure were used synonymously. This technique involves making incisions on the inside of the nose, thereby eliminating the possibility of external scars. This approach is best suited for individuals requiring minimal surgical incision or those having a fairly good shape of the nose.

The Open Rhinoplasty Approach

In the second and more recent approach, the ‘open’ approach, along with internal nasal incisions, an additional external incision is also made at the columella (skin between nostrils).  The surgery begins with the skin of the nose being separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired shape.

Septoplasty is a procedure that is performed to straighten any deviation in the septum or harvest cartilage graft for nasal re-shaping.

Nasal surgery might also involve ‘turbinoplasty’- a procedure performed if the air filtering structures are unusually enlarged.

The surgery concludes with the placement of an external splint on the nose and a light dressing placed inside the nostrils.

Consult With A Professional Plastic Surgeon

To ensure best results consult a certified plastic surgeon, preferably well versed with both techniques.
