Orthognathic surgery is surgery that is completed by a specially trained oral surgeon on the bones of the jaw to change their positions. Orthognathic surgery overbite correction can be completed when the upper teeth project too far over the front teeth. Orthagnathic surgery underbite correction is utilized when the lower teeth project too far over the upper teeth. Orthagnthic surgeries can also be used with corrective jaw surgery to fix injured jaws from car accidents or any other accidents.

Reasons for Orthagnathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery can be completed for aesthetic reasons or even functional reasons if the severity of the problem impacts the ability to chew food or even breath.

Orthagnathic Procedure

Oral surgeons usually complete these types of procedures in a hospital or surgical center and they can sometimes require the patient be admitted for several days. While the patient is asleep, the surgeon makes incisions inside the patient’s mouth to expose the bones that need to be adjusted or cut.  Sometimes the surgeon uses pins or screws to hold the bones in alignment.

Cost of Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery underbite correction or orthagnathic surgery overbite correction can cost from several thousand dollars up to fifteen thousand dollars in some areas of the country.  The cost is dependent on the severity of the condition.  If a patient has a functional deficit due to the condition, it is possible that insurance will help to pay for the surgery.

Orthognathic Surgery Complications

Due to the nature of this type of surgery, complications are rare but can occur.  Some complications that can occur with orthognathic surgery are as follows:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Numbness or stiffness in the face for an extended period of time
  • Shifting of facial bones

Consult with a Professional

Consulting with a trained surgeon who is an expert in orthognathic surgery is the best way to determine if orthognathic surgery is the right choice for you.  Many patients will experience an improved quality of life after surgery but it is best to discuss your options with your surgeon in order to make the right decision.
