Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a diluted form of botulism (bacteria) used by cosmetic surgeons and practitioners to paralyze facial muscles to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, resulting in a younger looking appearance.
Botox is the most requested non-surgical cosmetic procedure and is one of the best values for looking younger on a budget.
Although in use for several decades for neurological disorders and disorders of the eye muscles, the use of Botox for cosmetic procedures was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 and has been considered a safe way to weaken the muscles that cause wrinkles.
The drug is now being considered for use in such other conditions as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), juvenile cerebral palsy, and migraine and tension headaches.
Botox is injected directly into the facial muscles during a simple in-office procedure using a very fine needle. The procedure costs, on average, $382.00 per site (figures provided by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery). The results are visible within a few days and generally last as long as three to four months.
The use of Botox for approved cosmetic procedures is considered safe and effective. Botox injections have no documented complications and minor side effects include bruising at the site of injection, headache, respiratory infections, temporary eyelid droop, nausea and flu-like symptoms.
Botox is a relatively inexpensive way to achieve a more youthful appearance in minutes. There is no need for surgery or extended recovery time and the procedure can be repeated every three to four months as needed.
