It should come as no surprise to most people that many medications and medical treatments that are approved for use in the United States are first used elsewhere in the world.  After all, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) always does extensive testing before approving any medical substance or method of treatment. One of the most recently approved cosmetic enhancement substances is called Artefill.

Artefill has been used for over a decade in Europe as an injectable filler for many different types of facial conditions.  It was approved by the FDA in 2006 for limited use, and is also known here in the United States as Artecoll.

What is Artefill?

Artefill is a collagen substance that is injected into the depressed areas of the face in order to fill those areas.  It is much longer lasting than other cosmetic fillers.  While Botox gives results that might last for a year or so, Artefill gives results that last for over ten years in many people.

It is made of collagen that has microspheres suspended in it.  These microspheres act to encourage the body to produce its own collagen.  So, as the Artefill’s collagen naturally degrades, the body begins to produce collagen on its own to replace it.  This is what helps to make this substance so long-lasting.

A surgeon will inject Artefill one or more times into the desired area.  The entire treatment typically takes about 20 minutes or so, depending upon the number of injections necessary.  Repeat treatments may be necessary.

What is recovery like?

Recovery from Artefill is much like that from any other injectable filler.  There will be some redness and swelling, as well as possibly some bruising and pain at the injection site.  This will not last for long, though.  Patients can return to their normal activities at least by the next day since the procedure is an outpatient one.

What is the cost of Artefill?

Costs will vary. However, most surgeons charge by the injection.  Typically, Artefill will cost about $1,000 to $1,500 per injection.

What are the risks of getting Artefill?

Risks of having Artefill injected are quite minimal.  There is the aforementioned swelling, redness, and bruising, of course.  Itching is a possibility and can last for a day or two around the injection site.  For some people, they may find that the injection sites feel hard, but this will smooth out.  Those with thin skin may experience temporary skin darkening as well.  Allergic reactions are rare.

You should consult with a qualified Plastic Surgeon if you are considering and kind of injection procedure.
