Laser Hair Removal FAQ

Wherever unwanted hair grows, laser hair removal can reduce, slow, and, in some cases, eventually eliminate, the problem.  In addition to such cosmetic procedures as Botox injections and chemical peels, laser hair removal is one of the most requested, and most affordable, procedures.

Is Laser Hair Removal Is a Permanent Solution for Hair Removal?

For many people, laser hair removal provides permanent or semi-permanent results, eliminating the need for shaving, depilatory creams, waxing, or electrolysis.  The results of laser hair removal last far longer than conventional hair removal methods.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

  • Simply put, laser hair removal works by using a light beam to heat up the hair follicle, killing it and preventing further growth.
  • A licensed practitioner moves an intense, pulsating beam of light over the skin.
  • As the light pulsates, it targets the melanin (dark pigmentation) in the hair, therefore, the darker the hair, the better the results.
  • Laser hair removal is less effective on grey hair because it is less pigmented (grey hair has less color).

Does Long Does it Take to See Results?

Multiple treatments are generally required in order to see significant results because hair grows in cycles.  Not all hair follicles are active during each growth cycle and laser hair removal targets only active follicles.  For this reason, new hair growth may be viewed as a failure of the procedure when it is actually simply inactive follicles growing new hairs.  As each follicle is destroyed during new rounds of laser hair removal, new growth lessens.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

Although the cost of laser hair removal varies according to the size of the area being treated and the number of treatments necessary to slow or stop hair re-growth, the average national cost for treating one region is $429.00, with the fees ranging from an average of $425.00 for arms or bikini area to an average of $750.00 for the back or the face and neck area.  Several treatments may be necessary before complete results can be seen.

Since three treatments are the standard for laser hair removal, many clinics will offer a package price for the service.

What to Expect?

  • Laser hair removal is not painless, but generally does not require any anesthesia.
  • The procedure feels like a rubber band is being snapped against the skin.
  • Minor swelling and redness may result and can be minimized by the use of ice packs and/or a topical steroid cream.
  • Over the counter pain relievers can be used to minimize discomfort.
