Cost Conscious Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are but one more cosmetic tool in the battle against the ravages of aging – and one of the most cost effective.  After Botox injections, chemical peels are one of the best values in cosmetic procedures as they give long-lasting results at an affordable price.

  • A chemical peel is a simple, in-office procedure performed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.
  • A chemical peel creates a more youthful appearance by actually removing the top layers of the facial skin.  Skin damage caused by the sun, small wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation are all reduced, making the skin look healthier and younger.

The national average cost of a chemical peel is about $850.00 (figures provided by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) and although some chemical peels can be administered without a license, it is always best to consult with a Board certified practitioner before any cosmetic procedure.

The type of peel used for a chemical peel is most often determined by the extent of the skin’s damage.

AHA Chemical Peels

Peels containing alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA), found in fruit juice, tomato juice, and milk, are used when there has been relatively little damage to the skin.  AHA peels are great for mild acne, fine wrinkles, and dry and uneven skin.

BHA Chemical Peels

Another mild chemical peel is the beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) peel.  A bit milder than the AHA peel, the BHA peel is known to work deeper into the pores of the skin and may therefore be better for such skin conditions as acne, excessive oil production, and removing dead skin cells.

Trichloroacetic Peels and Phelol Peels

Stronger peels include trichloroacetic acid peels and phenol peels.  Each of these peels remove more surface skin and penetrate deeper than AHA or BHA peels, however, the strength of the peel depends on the concentration of the acids used.  These peels carry a higher risk of scarring than AHA or BHA peels and therefore should only be administered by a Board certified professional.

Important things to remember about chemical peels:

  • Most cosmetic peel procedures do not require anesthesia or a lengthy recovery time.
  • The stronger peels may require time for the skin to heal and the client may need to pay particularly stringent attention to the use of sunscreen for several months after the procedure.
  • For the most part, all the client feels is a mild stinging sensation during the procedure.
  • Stronger peels may require a topical anesthetic and the pre-treatment of the skin with Retin-A or AHA creams.
  • Stronger peels can help reduce, or even remove, freckles, pre-cancerous growths, deeper wrinkles, and skin blotches caused by aging and/or sun damage.

Chemical peels literally remove old skin and reveal the newer, younger-looking skin beneath the surface.  The resulting look can last for years. Find out more by getting a free consultation with a plastic surgeon near you.
