Cosmetic Surgery Tourism

Vacations can now be a time when you can get more than just a tan. With the growth of the cosmetic surgery tourism, you can also can a new look. Vacation packages are being offered by various companies which include cosmetic surgery as part of the vacation package. Many of these vacations seem appealing to people; elective cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance packages, meaning that these lower priced vacation plus cosmetic surgery bundles are sought after by many who wish to change their looks.

The Flaw

While the cosmetic surgeries offered in these trips are often marketed as being part of the vacation package, it should be noted that many vacationing activities, such as sunbathing, drinking alcohol, swimming, and a variety of other things can cause complications with the cosmetic surgery. Vacationers are usually unaware of this and inadvertently raise their risk of having complications.

Safety

Many people view cosmetic surgery as simply being a fun thing to do when you have the money. It must be remembered that cosmetic surgery is a very real kind of surgery. As with all surgeries, there are many risks involved. The chance of infections is higher since the cosmetic surgery is bundled with the vacation package, making people feel as if they are safe to do as they please after their surgery. Caution must be used, otherwise serious complications may arise.

Follow Up

There may be little or no follow up care provided by these cosmetic surgery tourism packages, which can mean that the patient may develop serious complications and may find it extremely difficult in order to find a surgeon that will be able to correct the problem once the vacation is over. This can be extremely dangerous and sometimes even life threatening.

Take Care

If you are planning on going on a vacation which offers a cosmetic surgery package, you should be sure to check and ensure that the standards meet up to expectations.

  • Ensure the surgeon is an ASPS Member Surgeon.
  • Ask if the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
  • Ask how many procedures of this nature the surgeon has previously performed.
  • Ask about the risks.

Remember, safety is always a key in any vacation, and with surgery, it is definitely a necessity. When mixing the two together, make sure you do all that you can to ensure you come out of it looking and feeling your best.
