Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is surgery of the jaw area. This includes dental surgical procedures such as surgeries to prevent and correct malocclusion. Malocclusion results from the upper and lower teeth lining up incorrectly. When this happens a person's bite can be affected and other problems can result such as TMJ which can be very painful. To correct the malocclusion an oral surgeon will perform surgery on the jaw area. Before a patient and dentist decide on surgery they will attempt other treatments. Orthodontics should be the first step in the treatment of a severe over bite or TMJ problems. However, in many cases braces are not effective and a more invasive procedure is necessary. Orthognathic surgery for the correction of TMJ has a high success rate. Patients are now finding that the surgery gives them permanent relief. This type of surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and the patient is free to go home after recovery.
