Gender Reassignment Surgery

Gender reassignment surgery is also commonly referred to as sex reassignment surgery or as a sex change operation. The purpose of these types of surgeries is to allow those with gender identity disorder the ability to live their lives in bodies they feel comfortable with and that correspond to their internal body image. Gender reassignment surgery is broadly separated into two types of surgery: female to male surgery, or FTM surgery, and male to female surgery, or MTF surgery. Breast removal or augmentation may be part of gender reassignment surgery, as is phalloplasty, hysterectomy, and many other genital reconstruction procedures. Facial feminization surgery is also common. Men who are transitioning to women may decide to undergo facial plastic surgery in order to achieve a more feminine looking appearance.
