Cheek Implants

One of the most common procedures associated with plastic surgery is a face lift, and cheek implants are often a part of face lift surgeries. Cheek implants are generally silicone inserts placed over the cheekbone to enhance the appearance. There are other forms of cheek augmentation, such as fat injections or injections of soft tissue filler. Implants placed directly on the cheekbones are called malar implants and produce a more contoured shape. Those placed below the cheekbones are known as submalar implants and are meant to fill out the face and repair a gaunt or sunken facial appearance. Most patients prefer an upper mouth incision for cheek implants, although this presents a greater risk of infection. However, the under-eye incision may leave a scar, which many patients would rather avoid. Some of the common risks of cheek implant surgery include infection, blood clots, postoperative bleeding, extreme swelling, and asymmetry.
