Acne Keloid

Acne keloid, also known as acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN), is a chronic form of folliculitis that develops into lesions resembling keloids. These lesions are particularly common amongst those of African descent and tend to be especially prevalent on the scalp and neck. Acne keloid is infrequently found in Hispanic and Asian populations. It is rare in Caucasians. Acne keloids do not result from acne, they are not caused by acne vulgaris, and they are caused by genetics. That said, it has been postulated that causes of acne keloid share some similarities with non-genetic acne causes: sometimes the irritation caused by inward growing coarse hairs or curved hair re-entering the skin results in an inflammatory response, which eventually can become a lesion. Acne keloid is most prevalent in those aged 14 to 25, lesions on those over 50 is uncommon.
