Is there A Lot of Swelling Involved After Lipo Surgery?

There is generally at least some swelling after a liposuction procedure.  One of the reasons for the swelling is that the surgeon usually instills a significant amount of fluid into the fatty tissue before performing a liposuction.  The amount of swelling that occurs is dependent on which part of the body is being treated.  Usually the lower body has a tendency to swell more than other areas.  If someone has had multiple treatments in the same area of the body, there is a tendency for increased swelling due to scar tissue.  Some people are simply more prone to swelling than others and will be more swollen after liposuction because they are genetically predisposed to swelling.  After a liposuction, patients are usually instructed to wear compression clothing for a set period of time.  If the patient does not wear the compression clothing at all or for a long enough time, they will have increased swelling

Minimizing Swelling After Lipo Surgery

Sometimes there is nothing to do to prevent swelling after a liposuction procedure.  The best advice for minimizing swelling after a procedure is to follow the surgeon’s instructions as closely as possible.  Do not over exert yourself, but try to be as active as possible following lipo.  Drink plenty of fluids and also wear the compression devices for the correct amount of time.  You should also call your surgeon immediately if you feel like your pain or swelling is worse than it should be.
