How Long Do Results from Liposuction Last?

Liposuction is the permanent removal of adipose, or fat, cells from areas of the body that are resistant to exercise.  As an adult, your body has a set number of fat cells and they become bigger as a person gains weight.  When a person loses weight, the fat cells become smaller.  With liposuction, the cells are permanently gone from a certain area or areas of the body.  If a person starts immediately after recovering from liposuction with a healthy diet and exercise plan, they will be able to maintain their new body and liposuction results.  If a person regains weight after a liposuction procedure, it is very common for them to gain weight in a different spot than where the fat was located before liposuction.

Maintaining Your Body After Liposuction

Be sure to discuss with your surgeon when you will be able to return to an exercise program.  Liposuction, while it removes fat cells permanently, is not a permanent solution to weight loss.  The only way to maintain your new body shape is to be disciplined.  It is also possible to regain weight in areas where the liposuction was done previously if you gain enough weight.  Normal aging can cause changes to body shape, but with hard work and a healthy, caloric appropriate diet will allow for the results of the liposuction to be easily maintained.
