Hair Transplant

For many men hair loss becomes a problem early in life.  While some men are able to accept their loss of hair calmly others dread the day when they will have to look at a completely bald head in their mirror.  Instead of resigning yourself to having no hair men can now take advantage of hair transplants.  Hair transplants provide a long term solution to hair loss by giving men a way to have naturally grown hair on their heads.  This means no more accepting hair loss or dealing with embarrassing wigs, messy potions, and other hair loss products designed to inadequately treat mens hair loss.  Understanding the truth about hair transplants can help you lead a happy healthy life.

The Hair Transplant Procedure

Having a complete hair transplant often requires more than one procedure.  The average man who is dealing with a large bald spot can expect to go through three different hair transplant procedures over a course of several months.  Each procedure is spaced out to give the scalp time to adjust to the new hair grafts and to regain normal elasticity.  This process helps give the illusion of natural, gradual, hair growth overtime.  The entire process is sometimes referred to as Follicular Unit Transplantation.

The dermatologist performing the hair transplant will first give the patient a local anesthetic to number the scalp.  Then a thin strip of scalp that is approximately one inch wide and four inches long is removed.  The strip of scalp is usually taken from the back of the head or an area where hair is still growing to help hide the scar that will later form in the area where the scalp was removed.  Once the scalp has been removed it is divided into individual grafts that each contains one to eight shifts of donor hair.  The grafts are then implanted onto the balding area with the help of small punctures that have been evenly spaced throughout the scalp.  After the three procedures are completed you will have a nice head of naturally growing hair that most will assume grew naturally.

The Cost of a Hair Transplant

Most dermatologists that specialize in hair transplants charge a set fee for each graft and incorporate the charges for the time spent in the procedure in the final bill.  Hair usually costs between $3 and $8 with some transplant specializes offering much lower prices.  Try to avoid going lower than $3since a lower quality of hair is usually provided for lower prices.  The final cost of a hair transplant can be anywhere from $600 to $3,000 and largely depends on the amount of hair being transplanted, the time the transplant takes, and the cost as well as the quality of the hair being used.  Many dermatologists will work out payment plans that break the total cost into installment payments.  In most cases you will pay before each of your three procedures.  This payment plan makes hair transplants affordable for most men who wish to find a long term solution to their hair loss problems.
