Nipple Reduction Surgery Overview

Breast surgery is not only concerned with augmentation or reduction for enhancement-- the size and shape of the nipple and areola also contribute to the beauty of the breast.

Over the years, pregnancies, breastfeeding, and gravity take their toll. Breasts start their course, downward-- the nipples and areolas follow. Nipples become inverted, protrude, sag or just become enlarged nipples. The areola can also be oversized. A woman perceives these conditions as unsightly, causing her to feel less desirable.

Nipple Reduction Procedure

Normally accompanying other breast enhancements, the nipple reduction, doughnut mastopexy or concentric mastopexy procedures are done within an hour or two in your surgeon’s office. Under anesthesia, tiny incisions remove excess nipple tissue, then dissolvable sutures reshape and reduce the newly-positioned nipples.

In the doughnut mastopexy or concentric mastopexy procedures, excess areola tissue is removed from around the circumference of the nipple with two circular incisions. Then reattached with invisible sutures to the nipple foundation and the breast. The result, a normal-sized nipple, in the middle of a normal-sized areola— all beautifully positioned on a perkier-looking breast.

Nipple Reduction Cost

To the surprise of many, there are very simple, safe and inexpensive procedures: the nipple reduction, doughnut mastopexy or concentric mastopexy that permanently restore a natural, symmetrical beauty to the breasts and new found self-esteem.

Recovery from Nipple Reduction Surgery

A snug-fitting surgical bra may be the only reminder you’ll have of the procedures. Any pain should be slight and last only a few days. Recovery time is one to two weeks before resuming normal activities, wait two more weeks before exercising. Healing is fast, and because of where the sutures are— there are no visible scars.

Nipple Reduction Surgery Risks

Risks and cautions are few and entirely outweighed by the benefits, but any that do exist may include:

  • Increased or decreased nipple sensitivity
  • Swelling and infection possible
  • Skin wrinkling around nipple possible
  • Not suitable for over-sized breasts
  • General anesthesia risks

All plastic surgeons have their own specialties in which they excel. Be sure the plastic surgeon you select is board certified and trained in the procedure you require.
