Ultrasonic Liposuction

Ultrasonic liposuction is an advanced method of traditional suction based liposuction.  It has been in use in the United States for several decades and has been found to be a safe and effective way to remove fat from various parts of a patient's body.  There are several types of liposuction a patient can elect to undergo, however, and so proper consideration must be given to how ultrasonic liposuction works and the advantages of this type of fat removal.

What is Ultrasonic Liposuction?

Ultrasonic liposuction relies upon ultrasound waves to assist in the breaking down and removal of fat stores.  Through a high-frequency wave, ultrasonic liposuction allows for fat cells to be more easily penetrated, and thus more easily removed from the patient's body.  There are two forms of ultrasonic liposuction: internal and external.

Internal ultrasonic liposuction relies upon the cannula, or the liposuction wand, to emit the high-frequency wave while already placed inside the liposuction incision.  As the wand gives off slight vibrations, fat cells can begin to break down, making their vacuuming and removal all the more easy.  Because of the constant vibrations of the wand, internal ultrasonic liposuction cannula must be replaced with greater frequency than suction assisted wands.  This is a benefit to the patient in always having newer equipment used in their procedures.

External ultrasonic liposuction combines two procedures: one that is performed prior to the incision and then the actual liposuction procedure after the incision.  Prior to the incision, an external ultrasonic device is applied to whatever area has been targeted for liposuction.  Through the emitted waves, fat cells begin to shake loose or break down.  Then, once the incision has been made and liposuction begins, the internal portion of the procedure can go forward in a smoother and quicker fashion.

Benefits of Ultrasonic Liposuction

There are several benefits to choosing ultrasonic liposuction.  One is that with the ability of ultrasound to break down fat deposits, greater amounts of fat can be removed at one time.  A bonus side affect of ultrasonic liposuction is that it can also help to tighten skin in the area that the liposuction is being performed.  Since excess skin can often be a problem when large amounts of fat are removed, this can be a very attractive side affect for this type of liposuction.
