Hydro liposculpture is a relatively new form of liposuction treatment that provides patients with a gentler alternative to traditional forms of liposuction.  As such a new alternative, it is only available in limited circumstances.  Because many patients are apprehensive about the discomfort associated with traditional forms of liposuction, however, hydroliposculpture is being a preferred alternative.

Traditional Liposuction

In traditional liposuction, a large and rigid cannula is inserted and swept back and forth to collect fatty deposits.  A cannula is a hand held device typically made of metal or plastic.  The surgeon grips the handle of the cannula, which attaches to a rigid shaft designed with holes that gather in fatty cells as liposuction is occurring.  Because traditional cannulae are so rigid and made of materials that do not easily conform to the human shape, liposuction can be extremely uncomfortable - even painful.  This form of liposuction has been the only option available for patients looking to reduce their fatty deposits in the past.  Although highly effective, the side affects can be long lasting.

Introducing Hydro Liposculpture

When a problem is noted, the easiest way to find a solution is to get to the root of the issue.  The root of the issue in discomfort caused by traditional liposuction is the rigid nature of the hand-held devices used to sweep fatty cells from the body.  So having located that as a root cause, it is natural that the solution would be to develop a cannula that is not so rigid and that in fact is quite flexible in nature.  Hydroliposculpture uses this next generation form of cannulae in order to create a gentler affect on the liposuction patient.  Because of the flexibility of this new alternative, the hand-held device is highly maneuverable, which not only cuts down on any discomfort experienced by the patient but also allows liposuction procedures to progress in a faster manner than was possible before.

Another component of hydro liposculpture is the use of a tumescent technique that combines saline water with lidocaine and epinephrine.  The injection of this solution under the skin prior to the beginning of the liposuction procedure helps to contract the overall tissue in the area and allow for the cannula to be inserted and maneuvered in an easier manner.  The combination of this substance as well as the less invasive cannula makes hydroliposculpture an increasingly preferred option for patients undergoing liposuction.
